Polypropylene fibers are manufactured by polymerization of propylene produced by purifying the petroleum. Polypropylene fiber is lightest in weight among synthetic fibers. It can float in water. Polypropylene fiber is used for home furnishings such as carpets and rugs; and industrial uses such as ropes, reflecting the characteristics of strong tensile strength, resistance to acid and alkali and soil resistance. In addition, it is also used for swimsuits, socks and underwear with superior in warmth retention and fast drying properties thanks to little moisture and water absorption. On the contrary, it is inferior in heat resistance.

Self-adhesive composite fibers compounded of polypropylene fiber and other polymers of low melting point are also manufactured for a wide variety of hygienic products .
